Terms of use

By using Phylodex you agree to these plain-language terms. Phylodex is operated by Davis Franklin LLC.

Your uploads. You are responsible for the photos, videos and metadata you upload — including that you hold the necessary rights, that it is accurate, and that anything you publish complies with applicable laws and the rights of others. Do not upload content you do not have a legitimate reason to store or share.

Your account. Keep your sign-in credentials secure. You are responsible for activity under your account, except where we have clearly failed to provide reasonable security of the service itself. Sign-in is by email and password.

AI suggestions are advisory. The species-suggestion feature uses an automated AI model and may be wrong. Suggestions are aids, not authoritative identifications; you are responsible for verifying any species determination before relying on or publishing it.

Third-party services. Phylodex relies on third parties to operate — including Supabase, Vercel, Stripe, Google (Gemini), Mapbox, iNaturalist, Sentry, PostHog, Resend, Bay Photo, and Backblaze — and their availability and terms are outside our control. See our Privacy Policy for what data each receives.

Subscriptions and billing. Pro is billed through Stripe at the price shown when you subscribe — monthly or annually — plus sales tax where it applies, which Stripe works out from your billing address. It renews automatically at that price every month or year until you cancel. You can switch between monthly and annual from Account. You can cancel online at any time from Account → Cancel subscription; you keep Pro until the end of the period you've paid for, and you are not charged again. When you subscribe we email you these terms and how to cancel. Your photos and pages stay if you cancel; on Free you can't add past Free's limits.

If Pro's price changes. We'll email you at least 7 days and no more than 30 days before a new price applies to you, with how to cancel. A new price applies only from a renewal after that email, so you can always cancel before paying it.

Printed Folios. A Folio is a book printed to order from your own photos by our print lab, Bay Photo, and shipped to the address you give at checkout — yours, or the person you're giving it to. Its price is shown before you pay. Shipping is $7.99 an order, and sales tax is added where it applies. We ship to US addresses only.

• Cancelling. You can cancel for a full refund, shipping included, until your Folio goes to the printer, which is within 2 business days of your payment. Your order page says when, and has the Cancel button.
• After it goes to the printer. It's being made for you, so it can't be cancelled or returned after that, except as below.
• Delivery. A Folio usually arrives in 2–3 weeks. If yours is going to take longer than we told you, we'll email you a new date and the option to cancel for a full refund, even if it has already been printed.
• Damaged or misprinted. If your Folio arrives damaged or misprinted, write to support@phylodex.com with a photo of the problem, and we'll reprint it free.
• Gifts. A gift ships straight to the person you're giving it to, with no prices in the package. Order emails and any refund come to you.
• The founding offer. 25% off the book, every copy, for the first 20 orders placed by Monday, November 30, 2026, Pacific time. It takes the place of Pro's 15% discount on Folios; the two don't combine. A cancelled order gives its place back.

Species descriptions. The species descriptions in Phylodex and its Folios are adapted from English Wikipedia articles and, whatever else these terms say, stay available under CC BY-SA 4.0. Each article is listed on Description sources.

Acceptable use. Do not misuse Phylodex — for example, do not attempt to break security, overload the systems, scrape in ways that harm the service, or use the product for unlawful harassment or distribution of illegal content.

Reporting a page. Anyone can report a shared page with “Report this page” at its foot, or by writing to support@phylodex.com. We review reports. If a page breaks these terms or the law, or infringes someone's rights, we may remove the page or its content. We'll usually tell the page's owner when we do.

Availability and disclaimer. Phylodex is provided “as is,” without warranties. We work to keep your data safe and the service running, but we cannot guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation. Keep your own backups of photos that matter to you.

Service changes. We may update the product and these terms over time. Material changes deserve clear notice where practical; continued use after changes means you accept the updated terms — except a change to Pro's price, which applies only as described under “If Pro's price changes”.
